Description

The project aims to improve quality of life in the old town by giving residents and nature more space. More green areas will reduce heat and create attractive recreational spaces. Unused sites will be transformed into climate forests and urban gardens, while mobile greenery will support markets and cultural events. The surrounding green belt will be enhanced both socially and ecologically, combining cultural uses with natural biotope areas. The old town will become largely car-free, except for emergency services, deliveries, and limited public transport. Accessibility will be improved through a new public transport route and a mobility hub above the train station. To attract residents, affordable housing is essential. A community housing project with flexible cluster apartments will be developed as social housing, encouraging interaction through shared spaces. Near the theater, a cultural area will emerge, including a community center in a former museum and an open-air stage.

This panel illustrates how the old town of Krakow can be transformed into a more livable environment for both residents and nature through the introduction of diverse types of greenery adapted to different urban conditions. For example flexible solutions such as mobile greenery are proposed for plazas that host multiple functions, including cultural events and markets. The implementation plan presents the various green typologies, their locations, and possible design approaches. It also highlights the introduction of predominantly car-free street types. The panel focuses on the development of a cultural hub in the northern part of the area, where a new cultural center and community living are established. It demonstrates how cluster housing can support communal life and how shared spaces can be created while integrating the existing theater functions
